Light color – how does it affect your mood and where should you pay attention to it?

Light color has a huge impact on how we feel in a room. It can stimulate us, calm us down, or promote focus. See how to choose the right LED color temperature for different interiors to achieve the desired effect.

What is light color?

Light color, or color temperature, is the hue of light emitted by a light source. It is measured in kelvins (K).

  • The lower the number of kelvins, the warmer the light – more yellowish.
  • The higher the number of kelvins, the cooler the light – whiter or bluish.

Sample values:

  • 2700K – very warm white (yellowish glow)
  • 3000K – warm white
  • 4000K – neutral white
  • 5000K and above – cool white / daylight

Light color and well-being and functions of rooms

Warm light color (2700–3000K):

  • Has a relaxing and cozy effect

  • Ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms

  • Creates a friendly atmosphere in restaurants and hotels

Neutral light color (4000K):

  • Closest to daylight

  • Doesn't distort colors

  • Works well in kitchens, bathrooms, closets

Cool light color (5000K+):

  • Stimulates and promotes concentration

  • Often used in offices, workshops, offices

  • Facilitates precise work, e.g. makeup, sewing, designing

How to choose light color for rooms?

  1. Living Room
     Warm light color (2700–3000K)
Introduces coziness, ideal for relaxation. It's worth using several light points (table lamps, sconces, LEDs behind the TV).
  2. Kitchen
     Neutral light color (4000K)
Good visibility and true colors of food products. Decorative, warmer accents can be added above the island.
  3. Bathroom
     4000K for makeup and shaving
     3000K for a SPA atmosphere
Combine functionality with relaxation by using different light zones.
  4. Office or Workplace
     5000K+ – cool light color
Improves concentration, prevents drowsiness. It's worth ensuring a low UGR factor (no glare).
  5. Bedroom
     Warm light color (max 3000K)
Promotes calmness before sleep. Avoid cold light in the evening – it can disrupt the circadian rhythm.

CCT Technology – one source, many colors

With CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) technology, you can adjust the light color in one light source (e.g. LED strip) according to your needs:

  • Morning – cool light to wake up
  • Evening – warm light for relaxation

Such solutions work great in bedrooms, living rooms, and home offices.

Light color markings – what to pay attention to?

On the packaging of light sources (LED bulbs, LED strips, panels), you will find markings like:

  • 2700K (Warm White)
  • 4000K (Neutral White)
  • 6000K (Cool White)

It's also worth checking the color rendering index (CRI) – the closer to 100, the more natural the colors. Good interior lighting should have CRI >80.

Summary

Light color is more than just aesthetics – it has a real impact on our well-being, circadian rhythm, and functionality of spaces. By choosing the right color temperature for each room, you create comfortable and healthy living and working conditions.
