UGR is an abbreviation that is increasingly appearing in descriptions of LED fixtures and lighting projects. But what is UGR and why is its value important for your eyesight, work comfort, and light quality? Find out how to interpret this parameter and how to choose glare-free lighting.
UGR (Unified Glare Rating) is an indicator that evaluates the level of direct glare caused by lighting fixtures. It determines to what extent the light dazzles the observer.
The UGR scale ranges from 10 to 30:
The lower the UGR, the greater the eye comfort.
Excessive light intensity or improper positioning of fixtures can lead to so-called glare, which:
This is particularly important in places where we spend a lot of time: offices, kitchens, schools, offices, or studios. Lighting comfort directly translates into our well-being and productivity.
| Space Type | Recommended UGR |
|---|---|
| Precision work (laboratories) | ≤ 16 |
| Offices, computer workstations | ≤ 19 |
| Schools, libraries, receptions | ≤ 22 |
| Warehouses, bathrooms, corridors | ≤ 25 |
For residential spaces, we don't always need the lowest UGR, but in a home office or reading light, it's worth aiming for UGR ≤ 19.
UGR does not depend solely on the light source. Key factors include:
No – only some fixtures have a precisely calculated UGR rating. Information about it is most often found in product datasheets. If UGR is not provided, it is worth asking the manufacturer or opting for trusted brands.
UGR is one of the most important parameters affecting lighting comfort. It is worth paying attention to it when choosing lighting for work, study, or relaxation. By selecting LED fixtures with UGR ≤ 19, you gain not only aesthetically pleasing, but above all healthy and eye-friendly light.
